Fresh from winning the lifetime achievement award at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2019, we catch up with broken beat legend IG Culture. Broken beat was an vibrant and energetic progression, combining elements of Jazz, African and Latin music with syncopated, choppy beats. The new school of this movement include the likes of K15, Henry Wu and Neue Grafik.
So, tell us a little about yourself.
I am a Producer / DJ who is known as a pioneer of the broken beat movement in the early 2000’s. I’ve been involved in countless projects and released on lots of different labels. Right now I currently run the CoOp presents label.
What’s your cuisine of choice?
I love Japanese food and Jamaican food. My favourite is rice and peas with sea bream and coleslaw

What are your other favourite neighbourhood food spots?
Since moving to Clapton I’ve been feeling the new African joint Accra Palace.
Are you a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen?
I’m a quick cook, I keep it moving in the kitchen!
What’s usually soundtracking you keeping it moving?
It varies from Headhunters, Capleton, Dennis Brown to Roska, Selectors Assemble, Tom Blip and Seven Davis Jr

What’s is the best you’ve been treated on the road?
I’m always treated well in Japan, the food is next level. I love Unagi, Salmon and Okonomiaki
